In my life and even in my yoga practice at times, I have noticed that I feel insecure. It is a battle I have fought (and am fighting) sometimes daily. I feel like I have to fight the voice in my head that says I am not good enough. That when I want to put myself out there or even when I’m just doing "life" I fight the battle of not being good enough.
That’s were yoga comes in. During my own yoga practice at home I practice these poses to help with security and trust. These poses really help me, and I pray if you are reading this and feeling insecure that these poses will help you as well. Before I get into the poses, let me remind you to ALWAYS do a warm up before you practice ANY sort of yoga. Below I filmed a short standing warm up for you to try if you like.
Pose #1 Inclined Plank
From a seated pose, extend legs. Place fingertips towards heels, press through your hands and lift hips toward sky. Point your toes toward the floor and look up at the ceiling. *Do not let head drop.
This pose is difficult. While you are here , INHALE deep breathe through your nose. I like to pray this as I inhale : “In this stillness…" Then EXHALE all out staying up I pray this : “…I trust you with all my strength.”This is a pose of TRUST.
Try 3 breaths here. Then slowly come out of it the way you came into it, and counter that pose with a seated forward fold.
Pose #2
Tree
Tree pose promotes poise and calm. Stand tall. Really picture yourself a tree with deep strong roots. Your standing leg is your strong root. Then bring your opposite leg to either your calf or ankle. I like to bring my hands to prayer, but you can lift them to either look like a cactus or any tree branches.
While here ask yourself, "When I feel fear, insecurity, how can changing my posture make me feel stronger?"As you INHALE through your nose, full deep breath, say: “When I look to you, God,” then EXHALE : “I am secure.”
Before you move to the other leg, come to standing Mountain pose
Stay in mountain for three breaths. Close your eyes. Become aware of your body and how you feel. Stand tall. Keep your feet hip width apart. Slightly bend your knees and press (root) down through your feet. Reach down through your fingers to relax your shoulders away from your ears, lift your chest, and engage your core. Point your tailbone toward the floor.
Then do tree pose on the other leg.
And there you have it! Just a few poses I have found to help with trust and security. A few weeks ago when I was working on this practice I came across this song. It brought me to tears. I had to write down the lyrics. Go listen to it if you haven’t.
You Say
by Lauren Daigle
I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I am not enough
Every single lie that tells me I will never measure up
Am I more than just the sum of every high and low?
Remind me once again just who I am , because I need to know
You say that I am loved when I can not feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
You say I am held when I am falling short
When I don't belong, oh you say I am yours
And I believe, Oh I believe
What you say of me
I believe
